I wish every person on the planet would read this book。But how do I arrive at this bold conclusion？ What makes this book so precious？Let me start with what it contains:all of the rules listed in A Rulebook for Arguments apply to oral arguments as well as argumentative essays; it also includes some specific rules on oral arguments and public debates。 Weston then finishes off with some of the most common fallacies， that is， arguments with faulty reasoning。 And finally， he gives you some explanatio I wish every person on the planet would read this book。But how do I arrive at this bold conclusion？ What makes this book so precious？Let me start with what it contains:all of the rules listed in A Rulebook for Arguments apply to oral arguments as well as argumentative essays; it also includes some specific rules on oral arguments and public debates。 Weston then finishes off with some of the most common fallacies， that is， arguments with faulty reasoning。 And finally， he gives you some explanations about definitions。So these are topics that should improve everybody's critical thinking whether it's about arguing for your cause or evaluating the arguments of others （the news， politicians， your friends and neighbors， etc。）。 And to get more sense and sound reasoning into our debates would benefit all of us， be it in order to make better decisions ourselves or just to cooperate more constructively。 In this regard the book could make a contribution by cutting out the （all-too-common） shouting matches which often contain flawed arguments and personal attacks （Ad hominem）。 Or as Weston puts it:Public debate is not another kind of opinion polling， and - as this book has tried to show from the start - argument of any kind is not simply a kind of fight。 Public debate is， ideally， a process of thinking together。（p76） The strength of this book is that every rule is concise and well-written。 It should also be very accessible for a wider audience， not just academics。It's a quick read with only 100 pages。 Even though you could read this in only 1-2 sittings， I strongly agree with other readers who warned to do that; that's because every rule is important for the following ones。 They really have to be absorbed and digested。 It's the sum of all rules that make your arguments strong。 Weston starts with short arguments （chapters 1-6） as the building blocks for the longer ones （extended arguments， chap。 7-10）。 Therefore， he urges you not to skip ahead。I recommend this book to people as young as high schoolers （from 13 or 14 years） and definitely when you start college。 Well， I had passed those ages long ago when I read it， but - as long as you breathe - it's never too late to learn。Highly recommended。 A solid 5 stars。 。。。more

This was the text book for my philosophy class。 Over all it’s great for its intended purpose。 It will be great to reference again as needed。 The only knock is that it’s not written from a Biblical worldview， so some of their examples make the arguments self defeating。 I just eat the meat and spit out the bone。
